The Heritage Trail : a homecoming, April 26, 27, 28, 1996, Kingwood, W. Va.
Call Number:
P20395
Date:
1996
Description:
Event announcement. "The history of Kingwood begins with a large grove of trees along the Winchester to Clarksburg Road. Early travelers stopped in the area to camp and picnic where the Preston County Court House now stands. Visitors were so impressed by the trees that they called them the King Woods. Permanent settlers made their way to Kingwood around 1797. Over the next 20 years the town grew from a collection of humble log cabins to a frontier community. On January 23, 1811, Kingwood was organized as the first town in the Preston Territory of Monongalia County. Within a decade the little community became the county seat of the newly formed Preston County."
