Includes a brief biography of Volck's early years, his career as a dentist, and his prominence as a figure in American art. During the Civil War while commissioned by Jefferson Davis, Volck "made his now famous sketch of General Jackson, drawn in camp while the general sat chatting with his staff officers unaware of the artist's presence."
